Explanation of Leveled Classes

for our teen dancers...
We offer leveled classes to meet the needs of our students as they advance.  Students in a Level 2 or above need final approval from the teacher before being enrolled in the class to ensure that all students are placed in the class that is best suited for them and will provide them the opportunity for the most growth.

  • Level 1 - designed for the beginner dancer who has little to no dance experience, or for dancers who are moving up an age group.  Focus at this level will be on building the technical foundations of the dance style that the dancer can build upon.

  • Level 2 - designed for students who have mastered the basic technical elements of the dance style and are ready to build on those elements with learning intermediate level skills and refining their technique. Dancers must get teacher approval before signing up for this level.

  • Levels 3 & 4 - designed for the more skilled dancer who can execute the intermediate level skills with strong technique and is ready to be challenged with more complex dance steps and longer combinations.  Dancers must get teacher approval before signing up for this level.

Why Ballet Is Essential for Lyrical & Contemporary Dancers (ages 10yrs & up)

Ballet is the foundation of dance technique—the alignment, strength, control, and body awareness developed in ballet directly support the expressive movement of lyrical and contemporary styles. While lyrical may look very different from ballet, it is deeply rooted in ballet technique, using the same principles of placement, balance, lines, and movement quality with added freedom of expression and emotion.

Regular ballet training:
  • Builds a strong technical foundation. Core placement, alignment, turnout, balance, and precise footwork learned in ballet give dancers the control and awareness needed to execute lyrical movement with proper technique and artistry.
  • Develops strength and protects the body. Barre and center work strengthen the muscles that support dancers' bodies and stabilize joints. This conditioning helps dancers safely perform lyrical's sustained balances, flowing transitions, floor work, and expressive movement while reducing the risk of injury.
  • Improves movement quality and artistry. Ballet's focus on musicality, breath, balance, and intentional movement helps lyrical and contemporary dancers develop the ability to tell a story through their dancing with greater confidence and expression.
  • Creates versatile, confident dancers. A strong ballet foundation helps dancers learn choreography more efficiently, adapt to different styles, and continue progressing as they take on more advanced movement.

Simply put, ballet provides lyrical and contemporary dancers with the technical foundation, strength, and artistic tools needed to move safely, confidently, and expressively.
