Costume Day Information - What to Know
See costume try on dates at the bottom of this page!
For costume try on day, female dancers should wear a leotard to class (if they have one) so that costumes can be tried on over their leotard, as everyone will be changing in the same room (boys will change in the bathrooms). If your dancer does not have a leotard, form-fitting clothing (like a tank top and bike shorts) are recommended to be worn under their normal dance clothes for trying on looser fitting costumes (e.g. hip hop costumes).
I want to mention that at recital, our main dressing room is a large open room that dancers will be changing in. If your dancer is uncomfortable changing in an open room, you may want to purchase a nude leotard that they can wear under their costume so that they are still covered when they are changing. You can purchase one online here, and it will be delivered to the studio for you to pick up.
How does a costume try on day work?
Costume Care
To keep costumes in good condition, costumes are not to be worn before the dress rehearsal and recital days.
Do not wash costumes.
Costumes should be put on a hanger and in a garment bag as soon as you take the costume home to protect the costume. (If you do not own a garment bag, you can purchase one from the studio).
To help get wrinkles out of the costume, you can try hanging your costume in the bathroom while taking a shower (but avoid getting the costume wet, as this may stain the costume!) Be very careful if you need to use a steamer or iron, and do NOT iron directly on the fabric (use a cloth in between costume and iron). We will not be able to order a replacement in time if your costume gets ruined.
Where do I find information about the costume?
Costume details are listed in the parent portal under "Costumes." Please make sure you take a look at your costume details so you know what pieces you should have with your costume as well as anything you need to provide yourself.
How will my dancer be wearing their hair for recital?
All 3-4yr old classes will be wearing their hair in a high bun. All other classes (ages 5yrs and above), will wear their hair in a low bun with a middle part. You can find a video tutorials here.
If there is a hair accessory with your dancer’s costume, you can find the details on how to wear it in the parent portal under “Costumes.”

How does a costume try on day work?
- Dancers will begin class like normal (they may start their class in studio B, or switch to studio B part way through)
- Part of the way through the class the teacher will hand out their costume
- The teacher will turn off the TV and close the doors (moms of 7-9yr and younger classes will be invited into the room to help their dancer change), and any boys in the class will be sent out to change in the bathroom
- If a mom or female guardian is not there to help their younger dancer, the teacher and teacher assistants can assist the dancer if needed
- If a mom or female guardian is not there to help their younger dancer, the teacher and teacher assistants can assist the dancer if needed
- Once costumes are on, the doors will be opened (any boy dancers in the class will then come in), and the dancers will show what they know of their recital dance in costume.
- Once the dancers have tried their dance in costume, everyone who came in to watch will leave the room (except moms or female guardians who are helping dancers change) and the dancers will change back into their normal dance clothes.
- Once the dancers have changed back into their dance clothes, the doors will be opened, the TV will be turned back on, and class will resume as normal if there is class time remaining.
- If the costume fits and has been paid for, the dancer will be able to take the costume home with them. If it does not fit and an exchange needs to be made, or if it has not yet been paid for, it will stay at the studio.
